Norton and Mayor Bowser to Host Tax Season Kick-Off Press Conference to Encourage Low- and Moderate-Income Residents to Use Free Tax Preparation Services, Monday

February 5, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will host a press conference with District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser and representatives from Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites across D.C. to raise awareness that tax season has begun and to provide low- and moderate-income D.C. residents (income less than $54,000) information on where they can receive free income tax return preparation services at neighborhood VITA site locations on Monday, February 8, 2016, at 10:00 a.m., at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (801 G St. NW), Great Hall (First Floor). For 15 years, Norton has worked with the D.C. neighborhood VITA sites, staffed by IRS-certified volunteers, to put on a citywide Tax Fair at the beginning of each tax season where low- and moderate-income residents could have their D.C. and federal taxes prepared for free. The Tax Fair also alerted residents to VITA sites, open from February through Tax Day, located in their own neighborhoods. The high-profile, citywide Tax Fair could not be done this year due to congressional budget cuts to VITA sites. Therefore, Norton and Bowser are hosting a press conference to get the word out to low- and moderate-income residents that they should not pay for what they can get from tax experts free of charge. Norton and Bowser are holding the press conference at MLK Jr. Library because it is the city’s largest and most centrally-located VITA site.

D.C. residents can find their nearest VITA site by entering their zip code at https://irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep/, or by viewing the full list of VITA sites on Norton’s website. In addition, residents who earned under $62,000 in 2015 can go to www.unitedway.org/myfreetaxes/ to file federal and state income tax returns free of charge.
