November 26, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will mark Small Business Saturday, a national day that celebrates small businesses in local communities, on Saturday, November 29, at 2:00 p.m. by visiting Nubian Hueman Boutique Lounge (1231 Good Hope Road SE). She will be accompanied by the Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, Maria Contreras-Sweet. Nubian Hueman is an ethic-centered art and fashion boutique in southeast District of Columbia. According to U.S. Census numbers, the District is home to more than 55,000 small businesses, with nearly 1-in-3 Black-owned and another 1-in-3 women-owned. Small Business Saturday, now in its fourth year, has become an annual tradition for American's to shop at smaller brick-and-mortar business in their community.

"The District's small businesses, tens of thousands strong, are a testament to the strong entrepreneurial will of our residents," Norton said. "These are our neighbors and our friends. We need to patronize and boost them, particularly at this festive tie of year, when they make a disproportionate share of their revenue."

Last month, Norton received the District of Columbia Chamber of Commerce's Lifetime Legacy Award, a rare honor for a progressive Democrat, for her economic development bills and contributions to the progress and advancement of the District. The largest of Norton's economic development projects is the construction of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) headquarters at St. Elizabeths, located in the neighborhood of the boutique. Norton said that she expects to see many more small businesses along Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue and Good Hope Road, as the DHS complex Center Building is expected to bring the DHS secretary, top officials and another 700 DHS employees to the area.
