Norton Congratulates Patrick A. Burke on Official Swearing-In Ceremony as New U.S. Marshal for the District of Columbia

July 28, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) congratulated Patrick Burke after his official swearing-in ceremony as U.S. Marshal for the District of Columbia. The Senate confirmed Burke by unanimous consent in May. Burke, whom Norton recommended to President Obama, was an Assistant Chief in the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

“We have been fortunate to have Assistant Chief Burke as the District of Columbia’s new U.S. Marshal,” Norton said. “As a D.C. resident with high-level local law enforcement experience, we are well-served as he continues his service to our city.”

Burke has spent his entire 26-year career as a police officer with MPD. He began his career as a patrol officer before rising to become one of five MPD Assistant Chiefs, who report directly to MPD Chief Cathy Lanier. From 2007-2011, Burke was the first-ever Assistant Chief for the Homeland Security Bureau, where he oversaw the special operations and intelligence divisions and coordinated with federal and regional security and police forces. Since 2011, Burke has served as Assistant Chief for the Strategic Services Bureau, where he oversees agency policy, training, testing and recruiting.

President Obama, like President Clinton, granted Norton senatorial courtesy to recommend candidates for federal district court judges and other important federal law enforcement officials in the District. The U.S. Marshal for the District of Columbia is responsible for the enforcement of federal law throughout the District.
