Norton Marks June 29 Kick-Off of ‘Music on the Mall’ with Congressional Resolution of Support

June 26, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced that the annual Music on the Mall series featuring performances by a wide variety of local artists will begin on Thursday, June 29, 2017, and will take place every Tuesday and Thursday from noon – 2:00 p.m. through July 25, 2017, on the National Mall across from the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum on Jefferson Drive SW between 4th Street and 7th Street. Norton today introduced a resolution honoring Music on the Mall and its sponsors. Her resolution acknowledges the work of the sponsors in bringing weekday musical activities to the Mall, a provision originally in Norton's National Mall Revitalization and Designation Act, which the National Park Service (NPS) has implemented administratively. The resolution also recognizes the Mall as a national treasure and a natural showcase for artists from the District of Columbia and the region. Sponsors of Music on the Mall include NPS, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, the Smithsonian Institution, the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation, and the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

"The National Mall is an underused platform for music and other arts, so each summer we bring the Mall to life with daytime musical performances by talented local artists," Norton said. "This summer, musical performances put the Mall's beautiful green space to its highest and best use for artists, downtown workers, residents, and visitors to the nation's capital."
