Norton, Mayor, D.C. Police, & Gun Safety Groups to Hold Press Conference Today on Capitol Hill

July 17, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will host a press conference today, Thursday, July 17, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. in Cannon 421, to discuss Rep. Thomas Massie's (R-KY) amendment passed yesterday in the House that would ultimately block D.C. from enforcing its local gun laws, as part of the Fiscal Year 2015 Financial Services and General Services Appropriations bill. Norton will be joined by D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, Metropolitan Police Department Assistant Chief Alfred Durham (Chief Lanier is out of town), and representatives from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.

Norton said that the press conference, which comes almost immediately after passage of the Massie amendment, is necessary because of the clear and present danger to residents and the federal presence in the nation's capital if the Massie amendment is not turned back in the Senate. She will also discuss the riders in the bill that prohibit D.C. from spending its local funds on abortions for low-income women and decriminalizing or legalizing marijuana, which were also approved in the Financial Services Appropriations bill.
