Norton Praises House Passage of Provision Allowing Sledding on Capitol Hill, Calls on Senate to Do the Same
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) celebrated today's passage by the U.S. House of Representatives of a provision included in the fiscal year 2016 Legislative Branch Appropriations bill report urging non-enforcement of a law prohibiting sledding on Capitol Grounds.
"Today the commonsense non-enforcement of the sledding ban on Capitol Hill, the way it has been for many years, is assured," Norton said. "I particularly thank Representative Sam Farr (D-CA) for working with me and his colleagues on the Appropriations Committee to get this provision included. District of Columbia families can also pat themselves on the back for organizing strong community support for non-enforcement of the sledding ban. Now I will be working in the Senate to have them follow suit and ensure that our kids have a ball on America's front lawn next snowfall."
The provision included in the report states: "Given the family-style neighborhood that the Capitol shares with the surrounding community the Committee would instruct the Capitol Police to forebear enforcement of 2 U.S.C. 1963 (‘‘An act to protect the public property, turf, and grass of the Capitol Grounds from injury'') and the Traffic Regulations for the United States Capitol Grounds when encountering snow sledders on the grounds."
