Norton Proud of WMATA Funding in House Transportation Appropriations Bill for 6th Straight Year

May 22, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) said she was elated that her work and the efforts of other members of the regional delegation succeeded in getting $150 million for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) included in the House fiscal year 2015 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill, which passed the House Appropriations Committee yesterday. Norton is the Ranking Member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's Subcommittee on Highways and Transit. The $150 million is the sixth installment for WMATA of the $1.5 billion over 10 years for capital improvements authorized in the 2008 Rail Safety Improvement Act, which Norton helped to champion as a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

"Even before the budget cuts and sequester, it has been a struggle to get the full $150 million each year for WMATA, and it is what we got this year in the House committee and have gotten every year," said Norton. "Although the President fully funded this installment, the House committee makes its own judgment. I believe there is increasing recognition among members of Congress that WMATA serves their constituents, their staff, federal employees, and nearly 20 million visitors to the District each year."
