Norton Says D.C. Should Declare April 15 ‘D.C. Taxation without Representation Day’

April 15, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today called on D.C. to declare April 15, the deadline for Americans to pay federal income taxes, ‘Taxation without Representation Day.’

“Understandably, in recent years, the District decided to make April 16 a holiday for D.C. Emancipation Day, to commemorate the freeing of the slaves by Abraham Lincoln. D.C. also ought to proclaim April 15 ‘D.C. Taxation without Representation Day’ in the District. April 15 is the day D.C. taxpayers, who pay taxes without a vote on federal taxes, have earned their day off. The cruel irony should not be lost on D.C. that Tax Day comes the day before our self-proclaimed Emancipation Day. Surely there is a way to link these two important days in our city. On Tax Day we pay our taxes. Emancipation Day should be devoted to demanding the quid pro quo – our full rights as American citizens.”
