Norton to Host Roundtable with MPD Chief Lanier, Congressman Garamendi, and D.C. Victims of Gun Violence to Stress Need for Congress to Pass Universal Background Checks Legislation, Tomorrow

June 28, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.—As part of National Day of Action for Gun Violence Prevention, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will host a roundtable with Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Cathy Lanier, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA), and five District of Columbia residents affected by gun violence tomorrow, Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at 5:00 p.m., at Martin Luther King Memorial Library (901 G St. NW, Great Hall).

The focus of the roundtable will be on congressional legislation to close the “gun show” loophole by requiring universal background checks on all private gun sales to help reduce the number of guns that flow illegally into the District from states with weak gun laws. Norton and Chief Lanier spoke at a press conference at MPD headquarters during the Democratic sit-in on the House floor, where the District’s Narcotic and Special Investigation Division’s Gun Recovery Unit displayed dozens of assault rifles illegally brought into the city and confiscated by D.C. police.
