Norton to Join Survivors and Victims of Gun Violence at the 11th Annual Tragedy Affects All Tea, Sunday

August 27, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will offer words of encouragement in support of survivors and victims of homicide and violent gun crimes at the 11th annual Tragedy Affects All Tea tomorrow, Sunday, August 28, 2016, in the ballroom of the Willard InterContinental Hotel (1401 Pennsylvania Ave. NW), at 2:00 p.m.

"Tomorrow's Tea is a time for survivors and victims of gun violence to come together to heal by sharing their experiences and resolving to rid our community of gun violence." Norton said. "I want to thank Nardyne Jefferies for her strong leadership in chairing this event and continuing to offer inspiration for other families who have suffered the pain of gun violence. Our city has the strongest gun safety laws in the country and ironically, for that reason, it is besieged each year by pro-gun congressional attempts to eliminate them. As I prepare for the Congress to return from recess, I welcome the opportunity to be in fellowship with families who know best why preventing gun violence is a priority for District of Columbia residents."

Just before Congress adjourned for recess, Norton fought off three amendments in the House Rules Committee to undermine D.C.'s gun safety laws, keeping them from going to the House floor. After Norton participated in the historic sit-in with Democratic colleagues on the House floor to force a vote on gun safety legislation, she held a community roundtable with Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Cathy Lanier and five D.C. residents who have suffered from gun violence.
