Norton to Participate in National Dance Day, Tomorrow Evening

July 25, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will deliver opening, dancing, and closing remarks at tomorrow's National Dance Day at the Kennedy Center, an annual nationwide celebration that takes place in communities across the country. This year's festivities in the District of Columbia will take place on Saturday, July 26, 2014, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage. The District's National Dance Day celebration is sponsored by the Kennedy Center and the Dizzy Feet Foundation in collaboration with Norton. Norton, who authored a congressional resolution marking tomorrow as National Dance Day, said she is excited about National Dance Day, which brings D.C. area residents of all ages together to celebrate dancing not only as an art form, but a fun way to stay fit.

"This event is about bringing the community together, residents of all ages and abilities, to dance our way into a healthier and happier lifestyle," Norton said. "I am so thankful for the support offered by the Kennedy Center, the Dizzy Feet Foundation, and Nygel Lythgoe of So You Think You Can Dance in making National Dance Day not only a fun event here in D.C., but a nationwide phenomenon. You can definitely count on me bringing my dancing shoes tomorrow!"

National Dance Day, which began on the National Mall in the District of Columbia and in Los Angeles, California five years ago, was established by producer and celebrity television judge Nygel Lythgoe of So You Think You Can Dance. The day celebrates dance as a way to combat obesity, promote healthy lifestyles, and bring communities together. Tomorrow's lineup will feature performances and demonstrations of hip hop, Latin, and African dance by actress Jenna Elfman, dancer Du-Shaunt "Fik-Shun" Stegall, and others. This year, Nigel Lythgoe choreographed an "Everybody Dance" routine for people of all levels of ability, as well as an adapted "seated" version, and show choreographer Chris Scott created an "Advanced Routine" for those who want to challenge themselves. The "Everybody Dance" routine and the "Advanced Routine" are available now on Dizzy Feet Foundation's YouTube Channel. Jenna Elfman and Fik-Shun Stegall, Season 10's winner of So You Think You Can Dance, will lead the participants in dance routines and demonstrations.

Norton first introduced a resolution to mark National Dance Day in 2010.
