Norton to Take Special-Order Time on House Floor on D.C. Statehood, Today

March 2, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The day after introducing her bill to make the District of Columbia the 51st state and hosting Mayor Muriel Bowser and Chairman Phil Mendelson at the Capitol to deliver the D.C. Council's formal petition for statehood to the Congress, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will take special-order time on the House floor to speak on D.C. statehood today, Thursday, March 2, 2017, at approximately 11:15 a.m. Norton introduced her bill, the Washington D.C. Admission Act (H.R. 1291), with 116 original cosponsors, a record number, comprising 60 percent of House Democrats.

"I find that many Members of Congress remain unaware of D.C.'s unequal status, and I intend to educate them about what ‘Taxation Without Representation' truly means for the 670,000 American citizens living in the District of Columbia," Norton said. "Our fight for statehood in the 115th Congress is just beginning."
