Norton to Visit D.C. Liberty Pole on National Mall to Support Statehood Advocates, Today

April 20, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today at 3:00 p.m. will join advocates from the District of Columbia and across the nation who have been rallying at a free speech vigil at 3rd Street NW on the National Mall the past six days to call for equal rights and full voting representation in Congress for the District's 650,000 residents. Advocates erected a 42-foot "D.C. Liberty Pole" near the U.S. Capitol to raise attention for the statehood movement. Last week, Norton took to the House floor for a series of speeches dedicated to making the District the 51st state in commemoration of D.C. Emancipation Day.

"Our creative and committed Liberty Pole advocates show how organized, energized, and innovative our statehood movement is," Norton said. "I am enormously grateful to them for keeping the pressure on Congress to provide D.C. residents with full and equal rights in new ways that inform the public. I am going to the Mall in solidarity with Adam Eidinger and his band of determined residents to express my personal appreciation for the Liberty Pole."
