Norton to Welcome D.C. Seniors to the Capitol for a Congressional Update and House Floor Tour, Tuesday Morning

July 18, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The highlight of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s (D-DC) annual Senior Legislative Day tomorrow will be the opportunity for seniors to sit on the House floor, where Members of the House engage in legislative business. This year’s Senior Legislative Day will begin at the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center (One First St. NE) on Tuesday, July 18, 2016, from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Norton will welcome seniors, most, but not all, from wellness centers throughout the District of Columbia to discuss pending bills and other congressional updates. The seniors will then enjoy a musical performance by D.C. singer-songwriter Eli Lev. They also will participate in a brief exercise presentation with William Yates, the Associate Coordinator of Older Adults and Senior Wellness at Hayes Senior Wellness Center. On their way to the House floor, seniors will visit Emancipation Hall to see the statue of Frederick Douglass, which represents the District in the Capitol Building, the Capitol Rotunda, and Statuary Hall, where the statues of Rosa Parks and other historic figures are located.

The Congresswoman holds Senior Legislative Day at a different D.C. location each year to take seniors to sites in the District where some may not have visited. Recent sites have included the U.S. Coast Guard’s headquarters on the St. Elizabeth West Campus, Arena Stage, the African American Civil War Museum, and Dunbar High School.
