Norton to Highlight Threat to D.C. Public Schools During Hearing on Classroom Censorship

May 18, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. — At a Committee on Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties hearing on curriculum sabotage and classroom censorship tomorrow, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will highlight the unique threat to District of Columbia public schools from Congress' control over D.C.'s local affairs. Norton warned that a Republican House could try to ban books and regulate curriculum in D.C. public schools. Representative Glenn Grothman (R-WI) has already introduced a bill this Congress that would regulate the teaching of race and gender in D.C. public schools.

"If Republicans take over the House next Congress, we could see them abusing Congress' undemocratic power over the District of Columbia to try to ban books and regulate curriculum in D.C. public schools," Norton said. "Congressional meddling in local D.C. matters is one of the reasons D.C. needs statehood."
