WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) tomorrow, May 26, at 11:00 a.m. will join U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director John Berry and members of Congress for the kickoff of "Feds Feed Families," OPM's national food drive, at the Capital Area Food Bank, 645 Taylor Street NE. Feds Feed Families helps to bring some relief to those in need by providing them with food and hygiene products.
"One out of eight households in the District struggles to provide enough food for their families each day," said Norton. "The need to feed hungry children is particularly important during the summer when schools are out and contributions to food banks drop because school nutrition programs have ended. Federal employees have had their salaries frozen and their pensions threatened, yet they have always been generous. I know they will continue to help those who are even less fortunate and most needy."
Through the donations of non-perishable foods from federal employees, Feds Feed Families' goal this year is to collect more than 1.2 million pounds of food to donate to food banks around the country this summer. Until August 31, congressional employees may deposit non-perishable food and hygiene products into the collection bins located throughout the Cannon, Longworth, Rayburn, and Ford House Office Buildings.
