Norton to Announce Congressional Art Competition Winners at Awards Ceremony, June 3

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will announce the winners of the annual Congressional Art Competition at an awards ceremony for District of Columbia students, parents and teachers on Saturday, June 3, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., at the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars (Residential and Academic Facility at NoMa, 1005 3rd St. NE). Norton's office received 120 submissions from students in grades 8-12 from public, charter, and private schools across the District. All student participants who attend the awards ceremony will have the opportunity to enter a silent raffle to win free art supplies, tickets for entertainment, cultural and sports events, and gift cards for local restaurants.

"Each year, we relish the opportunity to showcase the artwork of D.C.'s talented and creative students at our Congressional Art Competition awards ceremony and exhibit," Norton said. "We particularly appreciate the artists and jurors of our D.C. Congressional Art Competition Committee, whose work is indispensable to the competition's success. In addition, our generous sponsors across the city will be providing fabulous prizes for all students who attend."

Norton gave special thanks to the members of her D.C. Congressional Art Competition Committee. This year's jurors were Sarah Muse, Jack Rasmussen, Aaron Bryant, ‎ Iwan Bagus, Lissa Rosenthal-Yoffe, Kevin Nunley, and Zoma Wallace. The other committee members include Thomas Atkins, Greg Scott, Yaida Ford, Tiffani Gomez, Patricia O. Mitchell, and Jennifer Littrell.

The first place winner will have his or her artwork hang for one year in the Capitol and will receive a four-year partial scholarship to the Savannah College of Art & Design; the second place winner will have his or her artwork hang for one year in the office of D.C. Councilmember David Grosso and will receive a scholarship for a two-week summer immersion program at George Washington University's Corcoran College of Arts and Design; the third place winner will have his or her artwork hang for one year in the Office of the State Superintendent of Education and will receive a summer scholarship to the University of the District of Columbia with use of its gallery for a one-person exhibit.
