Tomorrow: Norton to Speak at League of Women Voters Event, Deliver Petition to Senate Signed by 12,500 in Support of D.C. Statehood Bill
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at Union Square for a League of Women Voters event to deliver a petition to the Senate signed by 12,500 people from every state in support of the District of Columbia statehood bill. Senator Tom Carper (D-DE), the lead sponsor of the bill in the Senate, will also speak.
"I'm looking forward to delivering the petition to the Senate tomorrow with Senator Carper and thank the League of Women Voters for their work collecting the signatures, which come from people in all 50 states," Norton said. "With 54% of Americans supporting the D.C. statehood bill, according to a recent poll, recent House passage, and President Biden's support, we've never been closer to granting statehood to the residents of the nation's capital."
The League of Women Voters is one of more than 100 national organizations that has endorsed the D.C. statehood bill. The bill passed the House last year and this year. Neither chamber had ever passed the bill before. There are a record 45 Senate cosponsors of the bill. President Biden strongly supports the bill.
