After Today’s Gun Possession Arrest in Capitol, Norton Asks Why Rubio and Jordan Do Not Overturn Federal Law Barring Guns in Federal Buildings in Their States or on Capitol Grounds
Rubio and Jordan Introduced a Bill This Congress to Wipe Out Nearly All of D.C.'s Gun Laws
WASHINGTON, DC—After the U.S. Capitol Police arrested a person today for bringing a gun into a House Office Building, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) asked the sponsors of a bill to eliminate almost all of the District of Columbia's local gun safety laws why they have never introduced legislation to allow guns in the Capitol Complex and other federal buildings. In March, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) introduced a bill that would impose among the least restrictive gun laws in the country on D.C., including allowing guns in certain D.C. government buildings.
"Instead of using their undemocratic authority to impose their will on the residents of the District of Columbia, to whom they are not accountable, why have Senator Rubio and Representative Jordan not used their legitimate authority over federal property to allow their constituents to carry guns in federal buildings in Florida and Ohio that they frequent daily, such as post offices, Social Security Administration offices, or Internal Revenue Service offices," Norton said. "Indeed, if they had the courage of their conviction, they would also allow guns in their own workplaces, the Capitol Complex."
Under federal law, it is illegal to carry a gun in the Capitol (40 USC § 5104) and in other federal buildings (18 USC § 930 and 39 CFR 232.1).
