Alerted by Trouble Spots Norton to Revisit the National Mall
July 18, 2008
Washington, DC - At the height of the tourist season, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will revisit the National Mall Monday, July 21, at 9 p.m., beginning at the Sculpture Garden, located near the corner of Seventh and Jefferson Streets, NW, where major problems persist. She will also tour the rest of the Mall as part of her continued work to improve public safety and to upgrade facilities in the area following startling assaults in 2006. This will be Norton's second visit this season.
"Lighting is key to crime prevention," Norton said. "Police cannot remain stationary, but good lighting is a watch dog that threatens criminals." She noted continued reports of insufficient lighting on the Mall.
Norton has introduced a bill, H.R. 3880, "The Mall Revitalization and Redesignation Act of 2007," a low-cost bill for improved amenities such as clean, flushable, portable toilets and free daily entertainment.
