NORTON, MAYOR, RESIDENTS, BUSINESSES TO UNVEIL
REMEDY FOR D.C.’S HIGH DEBT AND HIGH TAXES TOMORROW

Washington, DC—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and the entire bipartisan House delegation of the national capital region will introduce the Fair Federal Compensation Act of 2005 for an annual federal contribution to the District of Columbia on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at a news conference with Mayor Anthony Williams; Greater Washington Board of Trade President Robert Peck; homeowner and ANC Commissioner Alexander M. Padro; and small business owner Vernal Crooms. The press conference will occurat10:30 AMin front of the Lincoln Theatre, at1215 U Street, NW. As the deadline for filing taxes approaches this week, the participants will explain how they are permanently affected by the structural imbalance because it is a direct cause of higher taxes that they would not otherwise be charged and of the District’s high debt load, which translates into higher taxes. The structural imbalance results entirely from federally imposed mandates, state functions, and services to commuters.

U Street was chosen for the news conference because of the growth in small businesses there against the odds, surrounded by a community of homeowners in Shaw.
