Cicely Tyson: In Memoriam

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) released the statement below upon learning of the death of Cicely Tyson, the actress known for her portrayals of strong Black women.

"I was fortunate to know Cicely Tyson. We didn't spend much time together, but we clicked. I admired her for refusing stereotyped roles in Hollywood and insisting on roles that reflected her dignity and the dignity of Black people. Cicely Tyson paved the way for the Black stars America admires – Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, and all the rest."
