Congressional Black Caucus’ Health Braintrust to Host First-Ever Free Community Health Screening Clinic, Next Thursday

September 11, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Office of Congressman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced today that the Congressional Black Caucus' (CBC) Health Braintrust, with Norton and CBC Braintrust Chairwoman Dr. Robin Kelly, Ph.D. (D-IL), will host a free community health screening clinic on Thursday, September 17, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (901 G St. NW). Norton and Kelly are encouraging all District of Columbia residents to attend this inaugural health event, which will feature free health screenings, information, and support services by many of the region's leading healthcare providers and organizations. Offered services will include blood pressure and glucose screenings, dental exams, depression counseling, HIV testing, and nutritional advice.

"We are excited to launch this inaugural event to provide free access to basic health services that many residents desperately need," Congresswoman Norton said. "We welcome the opportunity to work with local health care partners here in the District and in other underserved areas to provide services and health information that can help us reach our goal to significantly reduce health disparities within a generation."

"As the CBC Health Braintrust works to advance health policy to reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes in underserved communities nationwide, we would be remiss if we didn't pay attention to the communities right here in Washington, within reach of the Capitol, that are also suffering from health disparities," Congresswoman Kelly said. "I am happy to partner with my friend and colleague Congresswoman Norton to hold this Community Health Clinic to help provide D.C. residents with the health services they need and deserve."

The focus of the CBC Braintrust is to end disparities in healthcare by performing outreach and connecting underserved communities with more access to quality, preventative healthcare in their area. Norton has been a long-time advocate of expanding access to health care and health resources for vulnerable D.C. residents.
