Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton Celebrates the Life of Reverend Joseph Lowery
March 30, 2020
WASHINGTON, D.C.--Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today remembered Rev. Joseph Lowery, a founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and a mentor when she was a young woman in the civil rights movement. Lowery, one of the last living greats of the movement, died on March 27.
"I have a framed picture of Rev. Lowery in my office from when he visited Congress and dropped by to see me in my office years after I looked up to him as a brave leader of the struggle," Norton said. "In the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, we insisted on going our own way, but as young people, we had little to lose. Joe Lowery, a chief lieutenant to Martin Luther King, Jr. belonged to the generation that led the way."
