Congresswoman Norton to Join Barney Frank, Julian Bond, and Steven Roberts for Newseum Event Celebrating 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, Sunday
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak at a Newseum event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at the Newseum's Annenberg Theater (555 Pennsylvania Ave. NW), along with former Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA), civil rights leader Julian Bond, and moderated by veteran journalist Steven Roberts. The event is being hosted by Moment Magazine and the Religious Freedom Center of the Newseum Institute. Norton, as a student, worked with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to help organize the 1964 Freedom Summer and was on the staff of the 1963 March on Washington. The event is free and open to the public (click here to RSVP).
"Although we come together to commemorate one of the most important laws in our nation's history, we must use this anniversary to call on Congress to revive and update the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which was decimated by the Supreme Court," Norton said. "Millions of Americans still face significant obstacles to voting, particularly people of color. I look forward to having a wide-ranging discussion reflecting not only on the achievements of the civil rights movement but also on steps we need to take to move the Voting Rights Amendment Act, which is stuck in Congress."
