October 8, 2008

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will host a special multi-purpose, entertainment-filled Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, Tuesday, Oct. 14, 6-8 p.m., at the Carlos Rosario International School, at 1100 Harvard Street, NW. The celebration will feature entertainment by Afro Nuevo and celebrity guests, sportscaster Gustavo Cherquis, of Telemundo TV, who will emcee the evening, and D.C. United Defender Gonzalo Peralta, who will sign autographs. This year's celebration also will feature an important educational component to prepare the Hispanic community for the conversion to digital television in February. Norton will honor two heroes of the community and the city: Maria Tukeva, longtime principal who engineered the building of the new Bell Multicultural High School and Saul Solorzano, director of the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN), one of the District's largest Latino non-profit organizations.

A Best Buy representative will conduct a demonstration on use of converter boxes, and the Consumer Electronics Association will distribute applications for discounts on the boxes. Norton also will conduct a lottery for several free boxes.
