For Latino Outreach Norton to Visit Giant Satellite Office after Walking
Tour Aimed at Helping Businesses with New Facades along 14th Street
May 14, 2007

Washington, DC-Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), who kicked off a new outreach effort to assist the District's Latino community with a reception for Latino leaders on last Tuesday, will go on a walking tour of 14th Street to visit Latino businesses and talk with merchants, beginning at Carolina's Restaurant located at 3700 14th Street, NW on the corner of Spring Road. Representatives of the Latino Economic Development Corporation will join Norton on the tour. It will end at approximately 6 PM at her "satellite office" at the Giant Food Store in Tivoli Square (1345 Park Road, NW), where she will greet constituents. The Giant location is the first of several roving, community satellite offices she is setting up to encourage Latino residents to use constituent and casework services that many may need but sometimes do not use because of language difficulty or recent immigration to the city. The satellite offices are under the direction of Latino Outreach Coordinator and caseworker, Enrique Fernandez Roberts. At the Tivoli Giant satellite office, Norton staff set up a table each Monday evening from 6 to 8 PM to take questions, make referrals, hand out information and give instructions for how a resident can get the help and follow-up they may need. Norton will be at the Giant until 7:00 this evening for media interviews and photo opportunities.

"Tuesday's reception with about 30 leaders and representatives of Latino organizations gave me great insight into what may be needed to get Latino residents and organizations to take advantage of constituent and caseworker services offered by my office and federal government agencies," Norton said. "I hope this outreach can counter some of the growing fears and concerns resulting from harsh immigration proposals, and doubts about approaching an office of the U.S. government."

The Congresswoman has always had at least one bilingual staff member.
