House Mark-Up of Voting Rights Bill Wed. Coincides with Senate Floor Vote

February 23, 2009

Washington, D.C. - The Office of Congresswoman Norton (D-DC) today said that the House mark-up of the D.C. House Voting Rights Act in the Judiciary Committee will take place Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m., in the Rayburn House Office Building, room 2141. The Senate almost surely will still be considering amendments to the bill if, as expected, the bill survives cloture on Tuesday. The bill, which was voted out of the House in 2007, is expected to easily clear the Judiciary Committee, but only after many attempts to amend the bill. Norton also expects a similar round of attempted amendments to the Senate bill, likely to occur simultaneously with the House mark-up.

"I could not be more pleased that the House and Senate are moving at the same time on our D.C. House Voting Rights bill," Norton said. "The House went first last time, but this time it looks like a race to the finish and the Senate is ahead by a lap."

The Congresswoman will join Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev) Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2:15 p.m., in the Capitol Ohio Clock Corridor, along with Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-CT), and D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty to discuss this important legislation. Media without Senate credentials should contact the Radio and TV Gallery at 202-224-6421.
