In Response to Norton Request, NFL Sends Copies of D.C. Licenses to Concession Managers to Ensure Vendors Serve D.C. Residents

November 30, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today released a letter from the National Football League (NFL) stating that the NFL had “provided all of our clubs with sample pictures of both the old and new District of Columbia driver’s licenses and have directed them to share this information with their concession management teams” after Norton asked the NFL to take action to ensure all alcohol vendors can recognize D.C. licenses. Earlier this month, Norton wrote the NFL after a vendor at MetLife Stadium at a September game between the New York Giants and the Washington football team did not recognize a D.C. resident’s driver’s license and initially refused to sell alcohol to the resident. The new version of the D.C. license lists “District of Columbia” rather than “Washington, D.C.”

“We appreciate that the NFL has worked with our staff and promptly taken action to ensure the rights of D.C. residents are recognized,” Norton said. “D.C. residents already suffer taxation without representation; the least that we expect is for our residents to be respected like other Americans at NFL games and other events.”
