NORTON APPOINTS TWO D.C. SUMMER PAGES TO BEGIN SERVING TODAY

Washington, D.C. – The Office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced that she has selected Jaleya DaMonique Leonard, a junior at School Without Walls, and Cosby F. Washington, III, a junior at Wilson Senior High School, to serve as congressional pages in the 2005 Democratic Summer Page Program beginning today. Normally House members are able to select only one page but the Democratic Leader provided an additional slot, enabling Norton to select two talented young people from several applicants. Norton said that the Summer Page Program slots are much sought-after and highly competitive. Students are required to have maintained at least a 3.0 GPA throughout their high school career and must be in the 11th grade to be eligible for the program. “I am certain that both students will make D.C. proud,” Norton said.

Congresswoman Norton last had a page during the 2002 summer program. The page program will run through July 29, 2005.

The pages play an important role in the congressional process, get to see Congress in action on the floor, and participate in other educational activities. Pages work in the cloakroom and assist in the preparation of House floor sessions. The students, who live in page dorms, also go on educational field trips.

Norton, who met with Cosby and his parents, and Jaleya and her grandmother after the two were chosen, said she was particularly proud of the students’ accomplishments, and of their relatives, for their guidance. “I was delighted that a significant number of D.C. students who applied were exceptionally well-qualified.”
