Lunchtime Music on the Mall Kick-Off Tuesday

May 24, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – The office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced the kick-off for an expanded Lunchtime Music on the Mall on Tuesday, May 28 and Thursday, May 30, 2013, at 12:00 p.m., on the National Mall, on 7th St. between Madison Dr. and Jefferson Dr., SW. A performance by D.C. area singer/songwriter Nila Kay who recently released her debut album, Serial Love, will begin at noon on Tuesday with an intermission at 12:30 p.m., when Norton, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and National Park Service (NPS) officials will speak about the popularity and importance of Music on the Mall to D.C. and region residents, D.C.'s visitors, and for the opportunities of regional musical talent. Lunchtime Music on the Mall, sponsored by WMATA, the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and NPS, in conjunction with Norton, brings local and regional musicians to the National Mall to perform Tuesdays and Thursdays during the lunchtime hours, giving visitors as well as federal and other office workers downtown a break from the pace of business in Washington. Lunchtime Music will continue every Tuesday and Thursday during the good weather months. Music performances will include gypsy jazz, indie pop, traditional North Indian classical music, acoustic soul, traditional Irish folk, West African percussion, classic rock and much more.

"Last year Music on the Mall marked the first time that the Mall had been used during work hours on weekdays for the benefit of residents of the District and the region as well as visitors," said Norton. "Instead of vacant landscape, downtown workers found entertainment on the Mall to go with their lunch."
