STATEMENT OF CONGRESSWOMAN ELEANOR HOLMES NORTON ON THE DEATH OF WANDA ALSTON

Washington, D.C. - Wanda Alston’s murder wounds not only her family but the cause of civil rights, particularly the unfinished struggle for equal treatment of the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender (LBGT) community where she was among the most prominent leaders, our local Democratic Party, and the city itself. It was a joy to work with Wanda because she managed to be at once focused, determined, and effective in her work and great fun and really funny in a city that needs that combination of human qualities. Wanda lived for this city and for her LGBT community. In turn, the city owes her a search for the killer until that killer is brought to justice.
