Norton and Davis to Introduce New, Consensus D.C. Voting Rights Bill
May 10, 2006
Washington, D.C. – Government Reform Committee Chairman Tom Davis (R-VA) and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will hold a news conference at 9:15 AM tomorrow (Thursday, May 11, 2006) in Room 2247 of the Rayburn House Office Building to announce the introduction of a new bill called the D.C. Fair and Equal House Voting Rights Act of 2006.
The bill will give the District of Columbia a full vote on the House floor for the first time since the District was established. Davis and Norton will be joined by Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-CA), Ranking Member of the Government Reform Committee and Christopher Shays (R-CT), the Committee’s Vice Chairman.
Although Davis and Norton have always supported the vote in the House, they have had to work for the last two years to ensure the legislation would not provide an advantage to either political party and would have a good chance of passage. The details will be discussed tomorrow.
