Monday: Norton to Attend MLK Day Events
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) tomorrow will commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at two events. Norton will give the keynote address at the opening ceremony of George Washington University's annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service and Leadership program. She will speak about how her activism during the Civil Rights Movement aides her work in Congress and relates to today's issues. The event honors Dr. King's legacy of compassion and empowerment by encouraging GW students, faculty, staff, and alumni to volunteer during a day of service within the Washington, D.C. community. Following the address, participants will engage in on-campus workshops on issues of diversity and leadership before heading out to service sites around the city.

Norton will also attend the "Let Freedom Ring Choir" performance hosted by the Kennedy Center and Georgetown University. The concert is a musical celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy, and will feature nine-time Grammy Award–winning singer and recording artist Natalie Cole, and also includes the Let Freedom Ring Choir with Music Director Rev. Nolan Williams Jr. The John Thompson, Jr. Legacy of a Dream award, which Norton received in 2008, will be awarded to George A. Jones, CEO of Bread for the City. Free tickets will be given away up to two (2) per person in line at the entrance to the Hall of Nations at 5 p.m. on Mon., Jan. 19 on a first-come, first-served basis.
