Norton and Senator Scott to Meet with D.C. Residents and Local Ward 8 Business Leaders, Tomorrow

May 21, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will join Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) to meet with local District of Columbia residents and business leaders in Ward 8 as part of Scott's National Opportunity Tour tomorrow, Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at 1:00 p.m., starting at 1920 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. SE. Norton worked with Scott to ensure that his "opportunity zones" provision in the tax law, which created tax incentives for investment in low-income communities, also applied to the District of Columbia.

"Tim and I were good friends when he served in the House, and I appreciate that we have continued working together since Tim went to the Senate," Norton said. "At first it was not explicitly clear D.C. was covered by his opportunity zone provision, but Tim graciously agreed to ensure neighborhoods in the District were covered. The District has already designated neighborhoods, which should soon start to see new investment where it is most needed."

Norton and Scott will sit down face-to-face with members of the community to discuss solutions and initiatives geared toward increasing access to opportunity. The stop will include a roundtable discussion, visits to several local businesses and remarks by Norton and Scott. The Ward 8 community Norton and Scott will tour is one of the neighborhoods nominated as an Opportunity Zone by Mayor Muriel Bowser.
