Norton Announces Another Post Office – Ward 1 Kalorama – No Longer at Risk for Closure

December 16, 2011

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) has confirmed that the Kalorama post office (2300 18th St.), located in Ward 1, has been taken off the United States Postal Service (USPS) Expanded Access Study List and is no longer being considered for closure. The decision was announced today by D.C. Postmaster Gerald Roane at a hearing that had been rescheduled, at Norton's request, to allow more residents to participate. The postmaster applauded the work of Norton and Councilmember Jim Graham (Ward 1) to keep the post office open.

"We're getting there," Norton said. "Now we have removed eight off the list. What's more, no closing will occur until after May because the Postal Service, in response to members of Congress, has agreed to postpone all closures until then. However, the list still exists and I will be trying to remove District neighborhood post offices from the list, notwithstanding the postponement. That only gives us more time to get the D.C. list to zero closures, as we did two years ago."

Last week, Norton announced that seven of the 19 D.C. post offices on the list for possible closure had been removed, and USPS announced this week that it would delay closing or consolidating any post offices until May 2012.
