Norton Announces D.C. Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration to Introduce the Community to New Health Care Rights
WASHINGTON, DC –Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will sponsor a forum to help residents learn how to use the new D.C. health care exchange, D.C. Health Link, as her Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration, on Tuesday, October 8, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:20 a.m., at the Carlos Rosario Educational Center (1100 Harvard St. NW). A panel of experts will offer a common-sense explanation about how to get affordable health insurance using the new exchange. The speakers – Mila Kofman, D.C. Health Benefits Exchange Board Executive Director, Alicia Wilson, La Clínica del Pueblo Executive Director and an in-person assister for D.C. Health Link, and Angela Franco, Greater Hispanic Chamber of Commerce President and CEO and an in-person assister for D.C. Health Link – will tell residents what they need know about getting affordable health insurance. Maria Gomez, President and CEO of Mary's Center for Maternal and Child Care, and recipient of the 2012 Presidential Citizens Medal, will be honored for her work on health care, education, and social services in the Hispanic community.
"This year Hispanic Heritage Month coincides with the launch of the health exchange portion of the Affordable Care Act, a subject of great concern to residents, particularly our Hispanic constituents," said Norton. "This commemoration is an excellent opportunity to start an informative public conversation, complete with a panel of experts, who will give common-sense explanations of the mechanics of how the exchange will work and benefit our residents."
