Norton Announces Oversight Committee Will Mark Up Two of Her D.C. Bills Tomorrow

June 28, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced today that the Committee on Oversight and Reform (COR) tomorrow will mark up two of her bills, the D.C. Chief Financial Officer Salary Home Rule Act, which would allow D.C. to raise the pay of its Chief Financial Officer (CFO), and the D.C. Local Juror Non-Discrimination Act, which would bar disqualification from jury service in the D.C. Superior Court based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The markup begins at 9 a.m. and may be viewed on COR's website.

"Tomorrow's committee markup highlights the importance of both bills to securing the elements of statehood for D.C., including full local self-government," Norton said.

The D.C. CFO is paid with local funds, but D.C. does not have the authority to raise the pay of the CFO. The jury non-discrimination bill would clarify that "sex," which is a protected class under the non-discrimination law that applies to jurors in the D.C. Superior Court, includes sexual orientation and gender identity. Under the D.C. Home Rule Act, the D.C. Council does not have the authority to enact either of these bills.
