Norton Announces Record 134th House Cosponsor of D.C. Statehood Bill

July 24, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced that Norton has broken the record for House cosponsors for her bill to make the District of Columbia the 51st state. The Washington, D.C. Admission Act (H.R. 1291) now has 134 cosponsors, and Norton said she will keep working to attract support during this Congress. Norton noted that D.C. residents have been working hard to help her add cosponsors, and that high school students with DC Vote got the record breaking cosponsor, Representative Chellie Pingree (D-ME), as they met with congressional offices last week.

"Thank you, DC Vote students for showing that the political environment we face with a Republican-controlled Congress and White House cannot keep D.C. from marching toward statehood," Norton said. "Each Congress, we have grown our foundation of support for statehood, breaking our previous records for cosponsors. We need D.C. residents to similarly keep demanding their equal rights as American citizens so that when the makeup of Congress is aligned for statehood, we are ready to seize our moment."
