Awards Reception and Exhibit Set for Saturday, May 14

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced it had received 135 pieces of artwork from District of Columbia students in grades 8-12 at 24 public, charter, and private schools, the largest number of D.C. schools that have ever participated in the annual Congressional Art Competition. Norton will announce the winners of the competition at an awards ceremony for participating students, parents and teachers on Saturday, May 14, from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars (Residential and Academic Facility at NoMa, 1005 3rd St. NE). All student participants who attend the awards ceremony will have the opportunity to enter a blind raffle to win free art supplies, tickets for entertainment, cultural and sports events, and gift cards for local restaurants. The submissions are part of the nationwide high school arts competition sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize and encourage artistic talent throughout the nation.

“With extra outreach, my staff has been able to add significantly to the number of student participants, especially from D.C. public schools,” Norton said. “We relish the opportunity to showcase the artwork of our city’s talented and creative students at the Congressional Art Competition awards ceremony and exhibit. I hope every student who submitted artwork will come to the awards ceremony on May 14 for a celebration of their work.”
