Norton Applauds House Passage of ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Repeal and Urges Senate to Do the Same

December 15, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC -- Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today applauded House passage of the repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" ban, and called on the Senate to again take up the bill for equal rights for gays in the military. "A bill that has the votes in Congress, enjoys the support of the American people, and expresses the will of the majority of citizens now serving in the armed forces should not be taken down, but put back up," Norton said. The Congresswoman said that time is the chief opponent of the bill now, but she thinks that the Senate should pass the bill, or face the shame of leaving discrimination in tact when it may very well have the votes to eliminate the ban. Otherwise, she said, this discrimination will continue to be costly to taxpayers and to gay citizens alike.
