Norton Applauds Transfer of Federal Land for Youth Baseball Academy (6/3/2010)
Norton Applauds Transfer of Federal Land for Youth Baseball Academy June 3, 2010 WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today applauds the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) approval of the transfer of 15 acres of federal park land from the National Parks Service (NPS) to the District to build a much anticipated youth baseball academy at Fort Dupont Park, championed by City Council Chair Vincent Gray. The Congresswoman played an instrumental role in talks between the city and NPS when discussions over conditions for the land transfer stalled. "After years of planning and negotiations, the District and the Washington Nationals will be able to provide underserved children a centerpiece to participate in one of America's great sports, become more active, and develop education and life skills all at one place," said Norton. "I am grateful to NPS for working closely with us, the City Council Chairman Vincent Gray, the Council, and NCPC to turn a corner today." The slated land transfer will also allow for the expansion of the Fort Dupont Ice Arena. The ice arena currently provides free figure skating and hockey lessons to disadvantaged youths. |
