Norton Asks Residents to Join Her in Honoring Those Lost in 2013 Navy Yard Shooting

September 16, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) called on District of Columbia residents to observe a moment of silence today to remember the 12 employees killed last year on September 16 in the Washington Navy Yard shooting.

"The victims and families of the Navy Yard tragedy remain in the thoughts and prayers of D.C. residents, who live among our Navy Yard employees," said Norton. "September 16, 2013, was a day that left us in shock and in horror, as the Navy Yard was overtaken by senseless violence. I encourage District residents to, at any point today, observe a moment of silence to remember this day one year ago, when the 12 innocents were taken from us."

Norton has a special attachment to the Navy Yard because she worked with the Clinton administration to bring the Naval Sea Systems Command to the area, which led in the revitalization of the now thriving Capital Riverfront neighborhood. Last year, after holding a moment of silence on the floor of the House of Representatives in memory of those who lost their lives during the Navy Yard shooting, Norton wrote a letter to President Obama urging an independent panel to investigate the security issues raised by the growing number of secured facilities that are increasingly located in residential and business communities.
