Norton Backs Impeachment Inquiry, Urges Democrats to Focus on Legislative Victories
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced her support for the House Judiciary Committee's efforts to obtain the unredacted Mueller Report and said that an impeachment inquiry is necessary to consider whether the President should be impeached. Norton is not a member of the Judiciary Committee.
"Following former Special Counsel Robert Mueller's testimony before the House Judiciary and House Intelligence Committees, I believe that it is imperative for Congress to obtain additional, unredacted information from the Mueller Report and other information in order to decide whether Articles of Impeachment are warrented. Therefore, I support an impeachment inquiry
"Following last week's detailed elaboration and review of the Mueller Report, we are virtually mandated to move to the next step. An impeachment inquiry is necessary to obtain all the information required to make a responsible decision on filing Articles of Impeachment. At the same time, we must not allow impeachment to consume all the oxygen from the people's agenda.
"As Members of Congress return to their districts for August recess, the people need evidence that House Democrats have been producing for them. It would be legislative malpractice and a disservice to our constituents to fail to highlight the many bills we have sent to the Senate – from raising the minimum wage and cutting prescription drug prices, to protecting health care for those with pre-existing conditions. This focus is necessary for two reasons: to maintain Democratic control of the House and to build pressure on the Senate to pass the House bills that promise to bring the immediate change we won the House to achieve."
"It will take time for an impeachment inquiry to get the necessary information. Meanwhile, we have plenty of work to do at home to raise the pressure on the Senate to move our House bills that respond to the most immediate needs of the American people."
