Norton Calls on Senate to Respect King’s Life & Legacy by Passing the D.C. Voting Rights Act
April 4, 2008
Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today released the following statement on the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:
“The most appropriate way to mark the assassination of the great Martin Luther King Jr. is to remember that he lived and died as an activist and, in his memory, to act accordingly. The best way for the Senate to honor Dr. King this 40th anniversary is to imagine the issues to which King would have committed his activism today. Forty years after Dr. King gave his life for equality, especially equal voting rights, the Senate can respect his sacrifice best by passing the D.C. Voting Rights Act this year.”
