Norton, Carper Break Another Record with 22 Senate Cosponsors for D.C. Statehood
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today reported that, with the addition of two Senate cosponsors, Senators Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Kamala Harris (D-CA), the Senate companion (S. 1278) to her bill (H.R.1291) to make the District of Columbia the 51st state has set a new record for total Senate cosponsors (22) in a Congress. Norton thanked Senator Tom Carper (D-DE), the Senate sponsor, for working with her to garner historic support in the Senate for D.C. statehood. Norton's bill has a record number of House cosponsors (146), a supermajority of House Democrats.
"We continue to break records for D.C. statehood this Congress, building the momentum we will need to keep our quest for statehood moving," Norton said. "With each new cosponsor, more Americans are learning about the denial of democracy to taxpaying citizens in their nation's capital. Each record we break should encourage D.C. residents to get even more engaged in the fight for their equal rights as Americans."
