Norton Challenges Constituents to Challenge Colbert on Facebook

October 14, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC -- Always looking for new paths to voting rights and statehood for D.C., Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) is challenging her constituents to send political satirist Stephen Colbert a strong message through Facebook on D.C. voting rights. Norton has frequently appeared on The Colbert Report, where she and Colbert have satirically sparred over D.C.'s vote-less status in Congress. Norton is inviting her constituents and supporters to post to the Events Tab of her Facebook page why they think D.C. should gain full voting rights in Congress "with as much wit as Colbert uses to make fun of us for not having our full rights," Norton said. "The buzz surrounding the Colbert and Jon Stewart rallies coming to D.C. on October 30, is too great an opportunity to miss to payback Colbert and to remind those who come that, unlike Colbert, D.C. has a cause worthy of a rally."

The Congresswoman's voting rights bill has more than enough votes for passage, but she delayed the bill when the National Rifle Association (NRA) attempted to attach a new and radically dangerous gun amendment to the bill. Norton is now in the midst of a fight to stop the NRA amendment from passing Congress as a stand-alone bill. At the invitation of local community leaders, Norton also holds weekly "Norton in Your Neighborhood Community Conversations" to discuss with District residents the next steps for attaining D.C.'s voting rights and statehood.
