Norton Cuts the Ribbon for Union Station Bus Deck

September 17, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After spending more than a decade trying to get intercity bus service into Union Station, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today joyfully cut the ribbon on the new Union Station bus deck. In 2010, Norton's efforts resulted in the first intercity bus service at Union Station.

"Bus travel has been transformed into a low-cost, virtual luxury alternative to trains and airplanes," said Norton. "Bus riders expect the same comfort and convenience at Union Station that they get with the new luxury buses. Beverley Swaim-Staley has brought new energetic leadership to the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation, and the new bus deck is a sure sign of her direction. In 2010, we brought intercity bus riders indoors to a makeshift facility for the first time. Today, bus riders now have a pleasant waiting room of their own and restroom facilities, and Union Station finally has met the congressional mandate to be truly intermodal."
