Norton Defeats Amendment Eliminating $380 Million for DHS Consolidation at St. Elizabeths

July 19, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C.Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced that she defeated an amendment in the Committee on Rules to the House's fiscal year 2023 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill that would have eliminated the $380 million she secured in the bill for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) consolidation project at the St. Elizabeths West Campus in the District of Columbia. Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne (R-TX) filed the amendment.

"Thank you to the Rules Committee for defeating Representative Beth Van Duyne's amendment that would have denied critical funds for DHS consolidation at St. Elizabeths," Norton said. "The DHS consolidation project is immensely important to the federal government as well as to the District of Columbia, where DHS will be consolidated. Currently, many DHS agencies operate from expensive leased spaces across the National Capital Region. Consolidating the headquarters of these agencies on one campus will improve national security coordination and cooperation while reducing the federal government's footprint and saving taxpayer money. DHS consolidation will also lead to more economic activity in D.C. from DHS employees, bolstering D.C.'s economy. The funding will go a long way toward completing the project, improving DHS operations and improving our country's security."

Norton also secured $200 million for DHS consolidation at St. Elizabeths in the House Committee on Appropriations-passed fiscal year 2023 DHS Appropriations bill. She has long supported the consolidation and has secured more than $2 billion for it.
