February 15, 2007

Washington, DC--Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, and D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray left a noon meeting with Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) elated by her unequivocal support for H.R. 328, the District of Columbia Fair and Equal House Voting Rights Act, and her determination to bring the bill forward as soon as possible. Norton said that the Speaker used the occasion to indicate not only her personal commitment, but also the national importance of the bill to our country and the great progress that has been made by Democratic leaders and the staff, who have been working continuously on perfecting the bill for final consideration. Norton noted that the Congress will be out of session next week which would result in some press on pending business, but she said that the Speaker’s commitment assures the priority needed for the bill.

The meeting followed the DC Vote citizens Congress Day, where about 500 D.C. elected officials, residents and other supporters came to Capitol Hill to push for the House vote bill.
